It all started with and idea and the determination to see it happen…

After exhibiting at the Pittenweem Art Festival in Fife, Gill Smith who is a resident artist of the Abbeyhill Colonies, wondered if the festival could be replicated in some way in the streets of the Abbeyhill Colonies. She had been struck by the similarity of a village atmosphere to the streets of the Colonies and the concept of community that was strong in both. From this idea the Abbeyhill Colony of Artists was formed and their first exhibition took place in September 2005 with 9 local Artists. Gill, along with her partner Bob Giulianotti organised the first few years of the COA exhibitions with William Mazur and his wife Kat Chisholm leading the way since then. Over the years the event has grown from an event for family and friends to one where people from all over Edinburgh and beyond come to visit. Below is a full list of everyone who has helped create this exhibition over the years and without them we wouldn’t be where we are today!
